Museums in Malta

Malta has one of the finest selection of Museums you may ever encounter in your travels of the world. From ancient temples dating as far back as 3000BC, 15th century armoury and World War II weapons and memoribilia, Malta has a lot to offer in the arena of history.
The Palace Armoury

The Palace Armoury is located in the Grandmasters Palace in Valletta was in fact Malta's first museum. The collection of armoury hosted here is probably one of the best in europe. The full suits of armour on display here are particularly impressive and many of the exhibits found here are of  French, Spanish, Italian, German and even of Turkish origin.

World War II Spitfire Malta Aviation Museum

Located beside the Ta Qali crafts village the Malta Aviation Museum is filled with aircraft and all things aviation. Many of the aircraft featured here are from the second world war, some of which have been recovered and restored to their former glory. Aircraft featured here include the Spitfire MKIX, Hawker Hurricane MKIIA and the Meteor NF14T.
Malta Maritime Museum

Housed at the former British Naval Bakery at Vittoriosa the Malta Maritime Museum charts Malta's maritime history. The first floor houses a display on the Merchant Navy with a collection of detailed ship replicas and paintings. Photographs, models, weapons and paintings relating to the history of the Royal Navy's British Mediterranean Fleet are also hosted here.
World War II Submarine
Grandmasters Palace, Valletta, Malta Grandmaster's Palace

Home to the House of Representatives and the Office of the President of Malta the palace was also home to the Grand Masters of the Knights of St. John until 1798. Inside you can see many beautifully decorated state rooms and 18th century Gobelin tapestries. Paintings of the Great Siege and former Grand Masters are also to be found here.
National War Museum

Opened in 1975, and located in Fort St. Elmo at the end of Republic Street in Valletta. This museum houses many displays relating to Malta's role during World War II and is a fine testament to the bravery of the Maltese people. Items not to be missed here include the St.George's Cross, Bofors Anti-Aircraft Gun and the Gloster Gladiator bi-plane.
