Dating as far back as 3000 BC the pre-historic structures which can be found throughout the islands of Malta and Gozo are some of the earliest on record. These ancient mystical sites are a fascinating window into the pre-historic times of Malta and also the building techniques used to create these amazing structures.

Pre-historic statues, carvings and altars are just some of the items uncovered at the various sites around these islands. When visiting Malta be sure to explore these ancient sites which include the ancient temples of Ggantija, Hagar Qim and of course the Hal Safilieni Hypoguem which is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Resting on a hilltop overlooking the mediterranean sea and the islet of Fifla, the Hagar Qim temple lies some 2km south-west of the Maltese village of Qrendi.

The temple of Hagar Qim excavated for the first time in 1839, dates from the Ggantija phase (c.3600-3200BC). Items excavated here such as the famous 'Fat Lady' statue are on display at the National Museum of Archaelogy in Valletta.
The Ggantija temples in Xaghra, Gozo are is one of the most important archaelogical sites in the Maltese islands. As with Hagar Qim the origins of this temple date back to the Ggantija phase.

Excavated in 1827 the megalithic complex consists of two temples surrounded by a massive boundary wall.
