About Malta

Situated 90 miles south of the island of Sicily and around 280 miles from the coast of North Africa the Maltese islands are ideally placed at the heart of the mediterranean sea. The Maltese islands consist of three main islands, Malta, Gozo and Comino which together make up the Republic of Malta. The main island of Malta itself is 27km at its longest distance and 14km at its widest. Its sister island of Gozo is smaller in size, some 14km at its longest distance and 7km at its widest.

Malta has a rich and varied history which has left its mark on these islands through the centuries. Influences from Malta's occupiers over the centuries can be seen across these islands from the architecture to the very language of the Maltese themselves. The official languages spoken in Malta are Maltese and English, with the Maltese language itself being of arabic origin. You will also find that italian is widely spoken, probably due to Malta's close proximity to Italy.

Malta's easy pace of life offers a welcome break and there are many places on these islands to explore. Places such as the Blue Lagoon with its white sands reflecting through the crystal clear water, great for diving and snorkelling. There are many excursions like this you can take or if you fancy a dive into Maltese history then the magnificent museums, palaces and churches that adorn this rugged landscape are well worth visiting.

Being an island Malta offers a variety of water sporting activities. Diving is amongst the most popular in Malta and Gozo with over 80 dive sites throughout the islands to choose from. Other activities include water skiing, snorkelling and wind surfing. There are many areas around the islands that cater to all these, try the beaches at St. Paul's Bay or Mellieha as these are very popular and provide good facilities.

Although not as large as other mediterranean destinations Malta has some wonderful beaches to be found mainly in the north of the island. These become very popular during the summer months with both locals and tourists. Popular beaches include Mellieha, Paradise Bay, Ghajn Tuffieha and Golden Bay.
